I was advised to limit my resume to one page. “Is it too long to have a three-page resume?” In my experience as a recruiter, I can tell you that a three-page resume is perfectly acceptable. Having relevant information on your resume is essential. In my experience, search engines and human reviewers are not impressed by one-page resumes. If your resume doesn’t contain the relevant keywords, it won’t show up in searches conducted by our HR department using internal databases and social media platforms like Linkedin.

Job seekers can be found by anyone using a search engine. If you want to be at the top of the list of candidates for a job, your resume needs to contain the keywords that we use in our search engine.

I conduct my candidate searches based on a variety of criteria, including the type of business, the job title, the software used, and any specialised knowledge my client may need, such as experience with financial modelling, multiple currencies, cash management, or treasury.

Where do you think the person who will hire you next is looking for candidates like you?

Do you use these phrases in your resume’s text?

If I do a search, will your name come up?

As a job seeker, I advise you to have a firm grasp on exactly what it is you want. Think about the kind of people you’d like to meet. If you want to be considered for the position, you should optimise your resume so that it is found through online searches. If you have the word “accountant” listed five times on your resume, rather than just once, you will rank higher in a list generated by social media search tools than your counterpart who only lists the word “accountant” once. You should also avoid unnecessary repetition so that your resume comes across as competent. Even if you get found by our search engine, you still have only 15 seconds to hook the reader. Make sure the most important details are on the first page to pique our interest and keep us reading.
