Recently, while working as a career counsellor at NYU’s Wasserman Center for Career Development, a first-year student walked in seeking advice on what major to choose.

In response, I asked, “Which of these fields do you really WANT to be in?” We had a more in-depth conversation about his passions, and then I asked him to take a breath and think about how he might change his perspective on his “quandry.”

I encouraged him to think about how fortunate he is right now, and how now is the best time for him to take the “leap” and go after the career he truly wants and feels “called” to do.

He is currently in an environment where he can “experiment” with different career paths with minimal impact on his future prospects because he is still a student.

that he may more accurately evaluate his options and make an informed, educated choice about his intended major and subsequent pursuit of full-time job offers following graduation (a clear goal plus a plan of action equals a greater likelihood of success).

He asked for reassurance, and I told him, “YOU are in control of your career…you create and steer it in the direction YOU desire.” Our session ended, and he thanked me, saying that he felt more hopeful and upbeat about the future than he had in a long time, and that he was looking forward to opportunities rather than dreading them. Moreover, it was after this discussion that I realised how crucial a message this contains for professionals of ALL ages and stages:

Whether you’re fresh out of school and looking to launch your career or have been in the workforce for two, five, or more years, YOU are the one who actively STEERS your career.

Unfortunately, this is something that many people fail to remember as they set out on the path that they hope will lead them to their ideal profession. They get “lost” and “distracted” because of the unexpected “twists” and “turns” and “traffic” they encounter, and eventually they find themselves in the “passenger seat” instead of the “driver’s seat” (passive steering) (passive reacting).

What this means…

Most people do set out with a clear idea of what they want to do with their lives and a plan for how to get there, but along the way they encounter difficulties and, out of fear, they deviate from that course. When this happens, they often end up wandering aimlessly for years, if not their entire careers, and eventually come to regret and become demotivated.

What I mean by “fear” is the anxiety we all feel when confronted with the many unknowns of life, such as “What will happen down the road?,” “Will reaching my goals be difficult?,” “They say nothing good comes easy!” and “Can I REALLY have what I desire and be truly happy?” So, I dare you to give that inner monologue this answer today:

When it comes to things that can be altered, “fear is always there,” “There is no fear when change is certain.”

Just take a moment to relax and think about this. Then keep saying it until it “sinks in,” and then say it again. Take as long as you need, whether that’s a minute, 15 minutes, an hour, a day, or more. You needn’t be in a hurry.

When it finally clicks, you’ll feel relief, like a weight has been taken off your shoulders. And when you begin to feel energised by it, I am pleased to inform you that you have made a powerful and MAJOR shift in your perception, which, when applied as explained below, can’re-calibrate’ and propel your career in the direction you desire.

You say, “That’s not possible!” What about external factors like the weather or the actions of coworkers that have a negative effect on my productivity and advancement in my field? Okay, you raise a valid point, and I do understand your concern. But for a second, try to see things from a different perspective.

In a nutshell, if you recognise and accept that change is the only constant in your life, including and especially in your career (you may not get a job you wanted, you may unexpectedly be let go from a job, you may not get a promotion when you expect it, etc.), then you should be prepared to:

1) Quickly and imaginatively reorient yourself BACK onto the original path you were on in response to a change.

2) You can make changes to your course or chart a new one that diverges visually from the one you had in mind or embarked upon, but ultimately leads you to the same place.

That is to say, just as you might make a change in your diet to address a health or weight concern or re-mortgage your home to pay for a major renovation, a child’s education, etc., you should be willing to think (and act) “outside the box” to advance your career.

Some ‘real world’ examples:

Perhaps the path to your dream career shows up in your life in a different way that you originally envisioned, such as:
-Part-time work
-Additional education / training
-Volunteer work
-A paced transition
-A ‘pause’
-A small step back
-A lateral move
-A new role

The most important thing to keep in mind is that you have complete control over your life’s trajectory, and that the more you insist on following the same path you’ve always followed, you will likely miss out on a wealth of other, potentially more rewarding options. And they can’t even happen if you’re not willing to receive them.

“Perception” is crucial in this context.

What you make possible for yourself and your career right now and in the future hinges on how you PERCEIVE and ACT on change. And you can either let external factors and unforeseen events steer you away from your intended career path, or you can accept the reality of change and accept that you will simply need to find a new or slightly different route to your ultimate goal (the key being committed to and focused on the same goal, but just a potentially different path to it). Indeed, there are times when the divergent route doesn’t appear all that divergent at all… , but what really matters is doing something that, over time, moves you in the direction you want to go.

The day after my encounter with the aforementioned student, I came across the following motivational quote, which perfectly captures the essence of the situation:

“The working world, like the rest of existence, is a chessboard. You have to be CREATIVE to forge your own trails.

Give yourself the freedom and authority to CREATIVELY forge your own way toward your ideal profession, whatever form that may take. There is no right or wrong way to go about things; only YOUR way! Get in the “driver’s seat” and take control right away… you must choose whether you will be the one to be captured when CHANGE unexpectedly comes your way, or the one to proudly exclaim CHECKMATE!

Could you describe a time when you felt that you were at a dead end in your chosen field? Stress at work and burnout are major contributors to unhappiness. As a matter of fact, you spend eight hours a day at work. If you’re having trouble moving forward in your job, consider the following six strategies.

Have you ever felt that you were at a dead end in your chosen field? Employee stress and burnout is a major contributor to unhappiness in the workplace. Since you spend eight hours or more at work each day, it stands to reason that you deserve some time off. That’s the equivalent of a third of your day, assuming you don’t sleep. That’s a lot of time to be unhappy about something.

Here are six fantastic strategies for breaking out of a career rut:

  1. Write down your ideas as they come to you. – I’ve mentioned this tactic previously, and I use it frequently. Put your question-style goal statement at the top of a blank sheet of paper. Then, just make a list of 20 possible explanations for your query. You might jot down, “What am I supposed to be doing with my life?” Then, remain sitting for the next half an hour to an hour while you consider this query and its solutions. Getting to 20 answers is the goal of this practice, so don’t give up until you’ve reached that number. You have the option of trying again daily until you find success.
  1. Inquire of 3 Relatives– Friends have a unique ability to understand us, even better than we do. Mention that you are at a turning point in your life and work when you next meet with a friend. What do they recommend you do that you might enjoy? You could be pleasantly pleased by the ease with which they assess your skills and experience and recommend a career path.
  1. Inquire of the management and staff – Your supervisor and coworkers probably perceive you in a way that you do not see yourself, just as your friends did in the previous scenario. As a matter of fact, they probably know more about your professional skills and flaws than anyone else. Assemble their responses and look for patterns to determine next steps.
  1. Use a recruiter– If you are looking for work, you probably have a résumé. A headhunter or recruiter’s downtime is a great opportunity to meet with them and discuss potential opportunities. I’ve done this a several occasions and found the locals to be friendly and approachable each time. After all, neither of you gets paid if the other one doesn’t. Any time I get an idea, it’s typically a good one.
  1. Fill out a career questionnaire – There are a number of online resources where you might perhaps take one of these exams for a price. However, many recruiters have this programme and won’t object if you take the test in their office, which is why I called them “headhunters” in the first place. These exams are thorough but time-consuming; I’ve taken them twice in my life. They ask you to rate your level of interest in various tasks and activities, the ones you would rather perform than the ones you would rather avoid. Taking one will open your eyes to potentially fascinating new facets of life.
  1. 6. Start a journal – Do you maintain a diary? If that’s the case, go back and seek for patterns in what you’ve written. Always be on the lookout for new activities and fads to try and ones to avoid. Actually, it’s equally as vital to locate examples of what you dislike and what annoys you as it is to find what you like. If you’re the type of worker who gets frustrated by an overbearing superior, an independent role may be more appealing. If you don’t like being bothered by coworkers, you could find working in isolation more desirable.

The most crucial decision you can make is to figure out what you want to do with your life. One-third or more of our lives are devoted to our jobs. This means that if we want to spend the next third of our lives doing something we enjoy, we need to give serious consideration to the work we do.
